The 23rd Annual Oxnard Salsa Festival will take place this weekend, July 29-31, taking over downtown Oxnard at Plaza Park, Fifth & B Streets.  The annual festival is a celebration of everything salsa — the music, the food and the dance. There will be a full schedule of live entertainment, a “Kids Korner” a recipe contest, a marketplace, and more. Admission and parking are free! But you can get lawn or chair seating for the concerts for $5. And of course there must be a salsa tasting tent – for $5 you get fresh tortillas and 10 tickets to sample from the 60,000 salsas! The Salsa Festival is Oxnard’s largest free community event, drawing nearly 50,000 people every summer.

For Festival information, call 805-535-4060, or visit the Oxnard Salsa Festival website!

Olivia Rox at Agoura Hills Rec Center This Friday

The Agoura Hills Rec Center welcomes Olivia Rox after her amazing performance on the final season of American Idol!

This Friday at 6pm, Olivia Rox will join the community and give an intimate performance at The Garage at the Agoura Hills Rec Center. The Agoura Hills teen made it all the way to the top 10 of American Idol this season. In an interview with the Agoura Hills Acorn, Rox said that she is “stoked” about this free welcome home event.

Doors open at 6pm and teens and families can hang around in The Garage where there are games and a great space to just hang out. Light appetizers and drinks from local restaurants will be served. Rox will give a short performance around 7pm and there will be special appearance by jazz musician Warren Hill (Olivia’s dad).

Parking is available in the rec center lot but if that fills, the city will run a shuttle service to parking down the hill in the City Hall/library lot.

Celebrate the Rec Center’s One Year Anniversary January 22

This Friday, January 22, will mark one year since the opening of the new Agoura Hills Recreation Center up on the hill behind the library. All classes and programs have moved over to the new building. It has been a joy for our family going up there twice a week for most of the year to participate in programs and sports classes.

Look how beautiful.

The event space is large and looks out over the city. The reception area is spacious and well laid-out. And a new space that opened last year, The Garage, is reserved for teens and pre-teens and gives them a place to hang out after school and play games or just relax.

On Friday there will be a whole schedule of tours and events to celebrate this milestone, capped by a movie night in the event space – showing E.T. and featuring free popcorn and hot chocolate! If you haven’t been up there yet, now is the time to check it out!
