Some Awesome New Things: The Habit and Vellabox Candles

New Things That Are Awesome!

Vellabox Candles and Gifts

My family and I tried some new things recently and three of them were awesome enough to share with you here. Picture me curled up on the love seat with a tasty burger in one hand, an organic freezer pop in the other, enjoying the light from a flickering candle. (That’s not at all how it happened, but it’s the way I would like you to imagine me.)

The Habit’s Golden Chicken Sandwich

The Habit is a fast casual burger restaurant on Canwood between McDonald’s and Trader Joe’s. I have been there a few times since it opened a few years ago when the mood has hit me. It’s a little bit more newsworthy now because a new location will be opening at Thousand Oaks and Westlake Blvd, which means I’ll have two Habits to choose from when the mood strikes again.

The Habit announced its limited-time Golden Chicken Sandwich ($6.25) on October 5. It’s the first fried chicken sandwich the restaurant has offered, and this one comes “hand-dipped into house-made seasoned flour and buttermilk, fried to perfection and topped with a new spicy red pepper sauce.” Since I don’t like spicy things, I made my food taste-tester (my husband) sample this one. He liked it but would not give me any more details. So there you go.

I rate this entry awesome because The Habit is nicer than a fast food burger joint, serves up the food quickly, and prepares their “charburger” with a relishy sauce that gives it some extra flavor. Plus, they have soft serve ice cream for dessert.

Vellabox

So, I still haven’t tried any of the subscription boxes of things and stuff that I keep seeing in my Facebook and Instagram feeds. Clothes, books, crafts, cooking supplies…meh. I just haven’t been interested. But then I read the description of Vellabox. It’s candles, you guys! I love candles! I mean I really love candles. This subscription service sends you candles! “We source the highest quality candles hand-poured by American artisans and combine them with a bonus lifestyle gift and a unique packaging style to create a memorable unboxing experience each and every month.”

And what an unboxing it was. I actually let my son open this one because to be honest, I had forgotten I agreed to review this thing, and so I didn’t recognize the name of the company. He didn’t do too much damage, and he really enjoyed opening the beautifully-wrapped candles. And then I enjoyed smelling them. For a long time.

This box is the Vivere October box with a fall theme, complete with pumpkin spice granola bar. The big candle filled my house with a crisp apple-cinnamon scent and made everyone think I was baking something. Psych! I think a Vellabox subscription would make an excellent host/hostess gift for that family member whose home you’re crashing in for the holidays.

Lunchbox Treats That Aren’t So Bad For Them

I do my best, but packing lunches gets boring after a while. Depending on what we have in the cabinets, I toss in granola bars, pudding packs, applesauce, or the rare homemade chocolate chip cookie. I also slice fruit — usually apples — and put the slices in a plastic bag and squeeze in a few drops of lemon or lime juice to prevent browning. Two days out of five those fruit slices come back home with one or the other child, but then that becomes his after-school snack.

In our awesome Scout Box from the Savvy Sassy Moms Product Scouts Program we found a few great new snacks to try. I’m happy to report that among my two boys, all of the snacks were a hit for either or both of them. And two of them are being demanded to make repeat appearances. Both of those products are from Plum Organics, the company that makes nutritious organic food for kids from babies to …well, let’s just say adults have eaten their foods, too.

Fruit & Veggie Mashups: These are like those apple sauce pouches that you slurp the applesauce out of, eliminating the need for a spoon to be packed in the lunch. Plus the little caps can be recycled. I had tried out these squishy packs from a different brand over a year ago and neither of my kids liked them. I guess my 3rd-grader forgot all about that failed experiment, because he ate two of these “beetbox berry” flavored pouches right after we opened the box. Then he asked me to buy them again. I don’t think he knows there are beets in the recipe…

It’s kind of awesome that each of the boys picked a thing they liked because they didn’t have to fight over who got to eat the most of any certain snack. The 10-year-old had to contend with me, though, when it came to the Jammy Sammy box:

Because hello, it’s a peanut butter and jelly sandwich snack! What could be better? Actually, their school recommends peanut-free snacks, so this selection was great for other outings, or an after-school snack. And for Mom. They also come in peanut-free flavors.

Another snack we wouldn’t have normally tried but was a pleasant surprise for all of us was the box of Annie’s Organic Cheddar Bunnies. Better than the alternative (that I usually buy) these bunny snacks contain 100% real cheese, organic wheat, and absolutely no artificial flavors, synthetic colors or synthetic preservatives. This box didn’t even make it to the first day of school.

Gummies that are good for you: this isn’t exactly a traditional lunchbox item, but it could be added in a fun little container for your child to discover a tasty treat while at school. Smarty Pants gummy vitamins look like gumdrops – they are sprinkled with organic sugar! – but they are not candy. These sweet chewables are multivitamins that are great for kids and grownups too. One out of two of my kids absolutely loves them, and requests them. Who ever heard of a kid requesting to take his vitamins?

What snacks do you put into your kids’ lunch boxes or bags? I’d love other suggestions, because even I get bored putting the same old things in their bags every day.

Learn How to Stress Less at Erewhon

Erewhon_store_shots-89

Erewhat?

No…Erewhon. It’s the organic natural foods store in Calabasas at the Summit shopping center off the Lost Hills exit of the 101.

My kids and I popped in there for the first time since they recently opened, to check out Erewhon Chats, an in-store demo series that features experts, chefs, and demos. On that evening the topic was “Meatless Mondays,” and a lifestyle expert was talking about non-meat products you can use in recipes. Unfortunately, (depending on how you see it) my kids were starstruck by the store, and they decided that it was time to ogle the dishes in the deli case, or wander the aisles looking at all the packaged foods. So because if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, we took a stroll through the store to compare prices and selection with the stores where I normally shop.

The organic produce was beautiful and reasonably priced. I even caught my older son wondering about the spaghetti squash, which delighted me because  I thought maybe I could get him to taste it sometime. But no, he saw that Erewhon sells if for 99 cents a pound, and thought “Cha-ching!” We grew spaghetti squash in our garden this year (quite by accident) so he was thinking we could sell our crop!

The healthy foods on offer at Erewhon were intriguing to my kids, who wanted to know what kefir is, and spelt. “Where are the sweets?” asked the younger one, and I am sure they were present, but I managed to steer him back to the deli case, where the most delicious freshly prepared foods were on display. Attendees of the Erewhon Chat were given coupons for 20% off at the deli, so I took advantage of it.

The boys ordered a giant vat of gluten free organic macaroni and cheese, which they inhaled. I got the vegan plate (might as well try something different!) which was tempeh chicken parmesan with non-cheese mozzarella, roasted vegetables, and maple glazed Brussels sprouts. Which I inhaled! (Actually I did save some for my carnivore husband because I wanted to see what he thought of it. He loved it!) The store also treated us to a bottle of freshly juiced…juice. They have a huge selection, and if you buy six they can go home with you in a nifty six-pack burlap carrying bag. The boys and I all loved the tart lemonade made with pure lemon juice, water, and honey.

Erewhon invites you to its next Chat, which is happening Thursday, November 20 at 6:00 PM. The topic is “Stress Less For the Holidays,” something I plan to do every year, don’t you?
