Flashback Friday: Moving Day

Moving day is something you never forget.

June 2010

My friend Sam is in town, trying to decide if he wants to move to Los Angeles. He’s lived in a lot of places, one of them New York, which he loves. LA is really, really different, amirite ladies?

am i right? amirite

I moved to Los Angeles from Connecticut in 1995. That’s 21 years ago. That’s a newly minted legal drinker ago. It’s kind of hard to believe. When I got here, my friend Lisa rented us a 2BR2BA in Pasadena with a view of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Pasadena – note the awesome 90’s hair, fashion choices, and distinctly post-college apartment decor

I moved to Santa Monica when I got into the entertainment industry, then I moved to the San Fernando Valley to get married and have kids, then of course, I moved here when it was time for school. As one does. And that day, my friends, was over 6 years ago already. I started this blog right around this time 6 years ago!

I started thinking about all this because Sam’s boxed arrived today. I’m such a good friend that I’m allowing him to store his stuff in my garage until he decides, should he stay or should he go? Just the sight of those boxes (delivered by the rock’n’roll FedEx guy) launched me down memory lane. How time flies.

Whenever I’ve moved I’ve always said “I’m never moving again! Grr!” But now I know to never say never. I really didn’t think we would move out of Northridge, but here we are. We love it here, but who knows what will happen? I’m okay with appreciating where we are for now.

Welcome to town, Sam.

On Being a Stay at Home Mom

I was thinking of posting a “flashback Friday” picture today, something from back when we first moved to Agoura Hills, and the blooms were still on the rose bushes, so to speak. I’m still so grateful to live here. I still look out my office window every morning over the rooftop of my neighbor’s house to see what the view is like. This morning it was shrouded in welcome mist, reminding me that it rained last night, and can we have some more of that rain, please?

But before I turned to this site I actually published a post on my other blog, and used a photo of my little boys jumping in the leaves a few years ago. The moment is frozen in time – they are perfectly happy, without a care in the world. And I’m glad, because that is the kind of life my husband and I dreamed about when we moved here. Not that we couldn’t rake up a pile of leaves in Northridge, but you know what I mean.

Here’s the photo.

And this is the post, in case you want to read it (just click on the excerpt). It’s an essay in reaction to some of the articles floating around the internet lately about what stay at home moms do all day – partially from my point of view, and partially from a working dad’s.

I urge readers not to take the bait. Parenting is hard no matter how you do it. The only people who are lounging around in “luxury” are the children, because that’s the whole point.
