Help Local Foster Children – Hope4Kids Festival and Run

Save the date! Join in to help some foster children and if you are into road races, you should check out this upcoming 5K/10K and mile fun run happening in Camarillo on April 29:

Hope4Kids flyer - event to help foster children

All proceeds from the races, the festival, and a huge silent auction they are having will benefit foster children in Ventura and Los Angeles counties through the group RaisingHOPE. Here are some sobering facts from them:

There are approximately 1,200 children in foster care in Ventura County and 28,000 children in foster care and Los Angeles County. Many of these children are in group homes or are shipped out of county because there are not enough foster families to care for them. These situations disrupt a child’s ability to live in a healthy family and impede their schooling, family visits and they even split siblings. Without our community getting involved many of these children have no one. They are essentially cared for by a system of paid staff in homes with other children. We aim to bring the children to the community so that each citizen can do something to help our most vulnerable children. We help hundreds of youth annually through our programs as follows.

Wings Over Camarillo Air Show with Frontier SoCal

Frontier SoCal hangs out with community at Wings Over Camarillo air show.

air show family

Last weekend we attended the Wings Over Camarillo Air Show at Camarillo Airport. This was the first air show the kids have ever been to, and the first one in a long time for me and my husband. We spent hours marveling at the aircraft, the aerobatics, and the displays of technology from World War II planes that still fly!

There were hundreds of planes on display, from privately owned small craft all the way up to enormous military vessels. There were also classic cars, food trucks, a kids’ play area, and vendor booths either selling merchandise or publicizing their services.

We visited the Frontier booth and my kids spun the prize wheel – they both chose hand sanitizer spray as their prize! No worries about germs today! Frontier has been attending many local events and reaching out to the community. Follow them on Instagram to see where they go next – it might be an event you want to check out! You can also learn more about them at FrontierSoCal.com.

The best part of the event was the air show itself. We watched in awe as pilots performed death-defying dips and rolls in the air and skimmed the ground.

My husband was the most excited by the entire experience, taking lots of pictures. He was very intrigued by the artwork on some of the planes.

Wings Over Camarillo seemed well-attended, and I know at least two other people who went to the show. Still, since it was spread out, it never felt crowded. I enjoyed watching families watch the airplanes in their flyovers, and it amused me to see how people used the enormous wingspans of some of the planes for shade.

Notre Dame Symphony Orchestra To Play Concert in Camarillo

By the time this event happens, we will know whether or not the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team is the National Champion.  Either way, fans of the university or just plain beautiful music might like to know that on January 10, 2010, the Notre Dame Symphony Orchestra will play a concert in Camarillo.

Of course that is the weekend I will be out of town, but I’m not selfish.  I want YOU to go and enjoy.  Thanks to St. Jude’s parish bulletin for including this listing.  Incidentally, the day after Notre Dame beat USC in November, there was applause at Mass.  It was awesome.
