The Little Prince Movie Opens August 5

littleprinceBased on the beloved book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince is an animated feature that will be released on Netflix and in select theaters simultaneously this Friday, August 5. Using both CGI and stop motion animation (using paper and clay in different scenes), the film brings the story to modern audiences by nesting it inside a new story.

A Little Girl, voiced by Mackenzie Foy (famous for playing the love child of a vampire and a human in Twilight: Breaking Dawn), strives to live up to her Single Mom’s exacting standards, hopping out of bed right on time and keeping to a rigorous schedule of study and exercise, all in preparation for her first day at a new school in an industrious town of workers, where every house looks the same. Except one. Their neighbor, The Aviator, lives in a quirky treehouse-like home next door, where he tinkers with his old airplane and eventually makes friends with The Little Girl. She is curious and entertained by his story about a Little Prince he met a long time ago, so she gradually gives up on her schedule and simply plays and explores like a regular child.

As The Aviator relates his tale to the Little Girl, the pair grows closer, but of course, in their tidy world such things cannot last. Single Mom gets wind of their unusual relationship and forbids it. The Aviator grows older and gets ill. But bolstered by the wonders of the story, the Little Girl takes matters into her own hands, refusing to believe that the Little Prince is no longer out there.

Actor Mackenzie Foy and director Mark Osborne at press interview for The Little Prince

Director Mark Osborne (Kung Fu Panda) assembled a star-studded cast, with Jeff Bridges as The Aviator, Rachel McAdams as the Mother, and a long list of other noteworthy names playing the friends that the Little Prince encounters on his trip around the cosmos. The Little Prince himself is voiced by the director’s son, Riley Osborne, whose scratch tracks proved remarkably perfect for the feeling the filmmaker wanted to create. Riley is 15 now, but he was 11 when the voices were recorded, and even in foreign-language versions of the movie, the boy’s voice remains. For Osborne, who spent many years working on this film, that captured laughter is a gift that will last.

I took my own children (little Princes, themselves) to see a screening of the movie, and I recommend you go see it in the theater if you can. It’ll be great to replay it on Netflix, but the experience of seeing a film in a theater is so special and grand, and The Little Prince is visually beautiful. On the big screen you will be able to see details that you might look for on repeated viewings at home – one that caught my eye was that the pages of the Aviator’s story are written in French. Osborne told me that was a nod to the French heritage of the book – he actually hired a forger to copy de Saint-Exupéry’s handwriting so that it could be recreated in animation.

The film is also very moving, emotionally. Touching on themes of friendship, love, and loss, the movie made me more than a little bit teary, and when I looked over at my kids I saw at least one of them wiping a tear away, too. If you haven’t had the chance to read The Little Prince to or with your kids, this is a great opportunity to get to know the story together, and then dive into the text to get a deeper level of appreciation for this classic title.

Kirby Planet Robobot: Game Review (Guest Vlogger)

kirby planet robobot boxOur family got a chance to play and review the new game, Kirby Planet Robobot for Nintendo 3DS, after we attended Kirby’s launch party in Los Angeles in June. The lovable pink hero returns in this sci-fi adventure: a villain has taken over Planet Popstar and threatens to mechanize the world. In this game, Kirby and familiar friends return, so players who loved them in past games will revisit their favorites. But there are new features, like Robobot Armor, added copy abilities, and the chance to tap a compatible amiibo figure for Kirby to inhale its capabilities and use them in Story Mode. Plus, you can play Team Kirby Clash, an RPG-style mini-game, with friends if you have additional systems and copies of the game.

Special to Agoura Hills Mom for this post is my son, Kyle, a boy I spawned and grew so that I could feature game reviews on my websites. (Not really, but it sort of sounds like Kirby inhaling an ability, doesn’t it? A little?) Kyle made this video in gamer-speak so that you would understand and know the coolest features of this new game before you start playing.

Kirby Planet Robobot kept both kids entertained while we were on a recent trip across the country. Our connecting flight got delayed 3.5 hours (I know) but this gave the kids the opportunity to play through Kirby Clash and declare it “super fun, Mom.”

We recommend!

(Please take a second to “like” this video and subscribe if that’s your thing. Kyle worked long and hard on this one! Okay so did I but I’m much more proud of his work.)

Thank you to Nintendo and KidzVuz for sponsoring this post! All opinions are my own (and Kyle and Brady’s).

Celebrity Sighting: Nintendo’s Kirby at Planet Robobot Party

Nintendo’s new 3DS game, Kirby: Planet Robobot, was celebrated at this cool party in LA!

My son, Kyle, and I got to take a summer afternoon to attend a party at a Los Angeles studio celebrating the release of Kirby: Planet Robobot, the new game for Nintendo 3DS. Of all the parties that Kyle attended with me over the years, this one might have been the most perfect for him. The first thing we saw was the giant blowup Kirby atop his star! He hovered over a half a dozen clusters of the perfect gaming setup. Bean bag chairs in Kirby colors of pink and yellow were arranged around gaming stations with 3DS systems loaded with Planet Robobot, just waiting for kids to come and play.

Kyle has been a Kirby fan for years. Here he is, ahead of his time, showing YouTube fans how to beat a level, 5 years ago:

Naturally, the moment we walked into the party, Kyle dropped into a bean bag and headed down the rabbit hole after Kirby in this latest adventure. I’ll be posting his review (and I’ll play the game too) next week, so check back!

The party was set up for kids and adults to enjoy. There were snacks as well as a table of pink and yellow candy.

There was a T-shirt making station where we could pick our favorite Kirby ability and have it printed right before our eyes. My favorite was Poison, not because I wanted to spray any noxious mists, but because I like purple.

Stars in the Room

Of course the gaming stations were the big attraction, but they were eclipsed for a short time by an appearance from Kirby himself!

Human celebrities were present too – there were a bunch of young actors and YouTubers, but the only one I met was the lovely Peyton List (Disney Channel’s Jessie and Bunk’d), who introduced the event.

Her brother Spencer read out some trivia questions about the game, and the kids who answered those correctly got tickets for door prizes. Kyle answered one (of course) and he won an awesome prize! A new Nintendo 3DS system and a copy of the game Planet Robobot! So check in (or tune in, he might be inspired to do his review on YouTube) next week for the game review!

From the adult side, I enjoyed the pink M&M’s and getting to reconnect with some of my fellow blogger friends, and also meeting new people. It was a colorful and fun afternoon!
