A Worthy Excursion: Manhattan Beach for Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk

The Friendship Circle is a wonderful organization that pairs students with their peers with special needs, to offer camaraderie and support, at school, at home, and in the community. There are chapters in 80 cities and in other countries too. We have one here in Agoura Hills. In the South Bay, the local chapter of the Friendship Circle together with Skechers, which is headquartered in Manhattan Beach, is holding their annual Friendship Walk on Sunday, October 27 with a goal to raise money to benefit their organization and give back to the local schools where they meet.

Kids in the Friendship Circle meet for lunchtime clubs so that kids with special needs can have a trusted community of friends at school. They also meet up at home, with the volunteers helping them to form connections and make friends. The South Bay chapter also holds many special events and even a special camp on Catalina Island in the summer that seems like the highlight of the year for everyone involved.

I attended a blogger luncheon at Skechers headquarters with members of the Friendship Circle, the Skechers corporation, and another sponsor, Fresh Brothers Pizza.  We watched a video and a presentation from a buddy pair of kids who met through the Friendship Circle. The connection between these teens – a volunteer and a boy who has autism and communicates by writing instead of speaking – was obvious and incredibly heartwarming. The boy’s parents were in attendance as well and they spoke about how The Friendship Circle has been instrumental in their son’s positive development over the years.

The Friendship Walk is in its 5th year and has grown to become a celebrated community event drawing participants from all over the region. Participants take off and walk from 9AM to noon, but there are many special events and activities in the area throughout the day, emceed by my pal, TV host and online personality Jill Simonian. A funky pumpkin race, that you can enter, will take place after the walk! All who are registered will get their own Walk T-Shirt, gift bag and medal – you can register online for yourself and your kids too! Registration is $25 and you can even add to that by raising funds to donate, too. Like their page on Facebook to keep track of all the new and exciting things they add almost daily, including giveaways!

This event has win stamped all over it. I mean, you’re helping people, having fun, and you’re spending the day here:

Reyes Adobe Days and Agoura Wine and Food Fest

reyes adobe days 2012

Reyes Adobe Days, 2012

Are you kidding me, Agoura Hills? This weekend is shaping up to be very active for our “sleepy” little town where nothing happens!

Reyes Adobe Days is such a huge hit that it’s now taking place over FOUR days, October 3 – 6. The big events for most families are the parade on Saturday morning and the fair at Reyes Adobe Park on Saturday and Sunday, but there are lots of things to do to celebrate Agoura Hills. Check out the website and make your schedule!

On Saturday night, October 5, there’s a great event for the grownups happening down the street at the Sheraton. The annual Agoura Wine and Food Festival benefits Hats Off For Cancer. “Over 50 of the Conejo Valley’s best restaurants and beverage purveyors will be offering exquisite bites, flavorful wines, top craft and micro brews, and exotic cocktail tastings to our exclusive guests.” Tickets range from $15 (for designated drivers) to $185 for VIP’s, and it looks like this event finally brought Uber, the text-based car service, to The Bubble!

MomFair Will Help Moms Get Back To Work

I have a little bit of interest in the whole “working mom” vs. “stay at home mom” lifestyle choice (or lack thereof) which is why I will be heading down to Culver City on Thursday – yes, east of Calabasas and over the hill – to the first annual MomFair:

The MomFair: Job Fair and Conference is designed to offer a variety of options to Moms. Whether you want to work from home, write a book, launch a product company, transition back to an office environment or start a business we want to help. Our event features a “Launch Your Business (or Blog)” discussion and exhibitor area with experts who can help you get started and manage your business, a “Work from Home Marketplace” where Moms can discover the genius of Direct Sales and the flexible solution it offers Moms to earn and income while home with the kids, and a “Speed Recruiting” area where Moms can meet with recruiters (resume in hand) to learn more about opportunities available to them in the job place.

Our speakers and experts will inspire you, give you tips on staying relevant during your Homemaker days, share their stories, give you expert advice and hopefully help you on the path the earning an income while raising children.

Held this Thursday, October 3, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the DoubleTree Hotel in Culver City, MomFair will be a day of speakers, panelist, speed-dating with potential employers, and a treasure trove of resources for people looking to get back to work. This event is tailored to help moms, keeping in mind the unique challenges that mothers face balancing family and work.

See the schedule here.
