Hike of the Week: Skelton Canyon Trail

IMG_7811I don’t usually set out on a hike later than noon, but on a recent Saturday I had several hours with no plans, and I was itching to get out in the beautiful hills. This hike is perfect and the light was gorgeous as the sun started its descent.

The Skelton Canyon trailhead is at the north end of Lakeview Canyon but before the gate that protects the beautiful houses in the hills. You can park on the street right near the sign. There is another trailhead on Westlake Boulevard but there is no convenient parking – you have to park across WL Blvd. on Santiago street.

Because these hills are surrounded by houses on one side, Westlake High School to the south, and Westlake Boulevard to the west, there’s a lot of civilization noise and even music from the marching band if you go up there at the right time, so it isn’t a perfect spot to get away from it all. More like getting above it all. Since the hills are green and the poppies are blooming, there’s enough beauty to distract you.

The trail starts out as a steep switchback-ey climb to the top where you are greeting by majestic oak trees and a mostly level wide path.

The larger trail turns to the west and down the hill to the Westlake Boulevard trailhead.

IMG_7805Don’t go that way. Go the other way (to the right).

To continue up the hillside, you have to go mostly by feel at this time of year, because the trail itself is covered by mustard plant. With a satellite Google map it’s easy to orient yourself and push onward. If you continue along the wash, you’re going in the right direction.

IMG_7790View from not quite the tippity top. The depression the left is the “wash” I referenced above but I’m not sure if that’s what this formation is actually called.

The trail continues to the highest point in the hills…

…and then descends over the top, where the terrain changes and more growth makes for even more beautiful hiking. It’s fun to look over the mansions in the canyon to the east and wonder who lives there and what it must be like to have this view.

You have to turn around and hike back out the way you came because the trail ends behind some more incredible houses. It’s about a mile and a half to this point, so a full 3 miles to hike in and back. Some of the terrain is pretty steep, so you’ll get a workout, plus you get to see all of this.

Find Love or Treasure at Malibu Country Market on Valentine’s Weekend

These monkeys can’t find the clues.

Last year Vintage Malibu at Malibu Country Mart debuted its Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt – couples lined up in the morning and when the race began, they set out to follow the clues and be the first to solve them all. The prize? A valuable vintage piece of jewelry. Owner Lauren Severson is excited that the event is back for a second year. “We were new last year,” she says, “So we are hoping more locals come to be part of the event this year.”

Actually there is more than one prize, just like last year.

1. Grand prize: Vintage Malibu diamond necklace from the Kwiat Vintage Collection ($2,600)
2. $500 Malibu Country Mart gift card
3. $250 Malibu Country Mart gift card

I’m kind of regretting telling you about it, actually, because as a geocacher, I’m pretty good at following clues and finding hidden things. I could win this. Any of those prizes would be great Valentine’s Day gifts from me to myself.

If you’re just out for some shopping at the gorgeous Malibu Country Mart, the children’s boutique next door to Vintage, located to the south of the children’s playground, is having an amazing sale.

98% Angel is closing its doors after Valentine’s day and selling everything at 75% off. That means your child can have a pair of $300 jeans at much much less. If there are any left. The clothes and accessories are adorable, but my favorites are the simple logo sweatshirts and T-shirts, because I just love the name of the store, which will live online after the Malibu location is closed.

What’s Your Story? Expressing Motherhood Accepting Submissions 2/16/15

exmo spring 15

Expressing Motherhood is a stage show in which people stand before you and tell – or perform – their stories about mothers. About being mothers, having mothers, loving or hating mothers, losing and remembering mothers.

I’ve seen the show more times than I can count now, over the years. The producers have staged it all over Los Angeles, and in New York, Chicago, and Boston. Last winter I was honored to be included in the show myself. My story was the mostly humorous tale of my long evolution from relatively cool person into a suburban PTA mom. My co-stars were 11 incredible storytellers. There were songs, laughter, tears, and wine flowing in the green room.

Submissions for the spring Los Angeles show will be accepted on Monday, February 16. All you need to do is share your story. You don’t have to be a writer or a performer. Just type up your story – one that takes you 5 minutes or less to read out loud, and send it in to the email address given on the website. The power of your story is what drives your submission. No in-person audition necessary.

Here are some tips and requirements:

*Pieces need to be NO longer than 5 minutes when read aloud. Please read them aloud and time yourself.

*Make sure it’s your story about motherhood, not someone else’s.

*Pieces about small portions of motherhood often make very interesting pieces versus a broad “Motherhood is hard” piece.

*I’m looking for stories about motherhood. That means you don’t have to be a mom. You can be a son, a woman who chooses to not have children. Etc.

I encourage you to submit if you have a great story that is bursting to come out of you. Keep your eye on ExpressingMotherhood.com for more information.
