Dig Cycle Is the New Spin Class in Town

Dig Cycle & Strength was one of the first businesses to open in the brand new shopping center at the north end of Las Virgenes Road. Locals who like a good exercise class should appreciate Dig Cycle’s cheerful atmosphere, varied workout menu, and its big parking lot.

Dig Cycle opened last year, adding another spin studio to the local area (others I’ve tried are Soulcycle and Cycle Bar). For me the location is pretty convenient, and the class schedule has many sessions that fit my own. I tried out two different instructors, and found the class as high energy and tough as the other studios. What Dig Cycle offers that the others don’t though, is an additional gym space with strength and conditioning options. You can take classes that incorporate those into your workout. For my feature, I only tried cycling.

Dig Cycle gym

By now the gym is getting more popular and as I strapped my shoes on for a recent class taught by instructor Lauren, I noticed many other participants greeting each other by name and getting ready together. It was clear that they had met each other at this gym, which is a nice place to find a supportive community. Lauren’s class that evening was titled “Dig50,” listed as the gym’s signature 50-minute ride. Lauren guided us through intervals of speed cycling, simulated hills, some movement, and hand weights. The bikes at Dig have little screens that show you your RPMs, and Lauren shouted out goal RPM ranges for each of the different intervals. If you could sustain the target ranges during the specified time periods, you’d be hitting what she set as a goal for you.

Well.

At my first Dig Cycle class several months ago, I felt strong enough to think I could hit those goals with an instructor named Tina. I only learned lately that Tina is considered a particularly challenging instructor. At the time though, I pushed myself so hard I thought I was going to pass out, throw up, or both. To be fair, I think that every time I exercise, so it’s not her fault at all.

The point is, I learned my lesson that day, and in giving Dig Cycle another chance I made a pledge to myself that I would take it easier this time. So in Lauren’s recent class, I did. I tried to hit the RPM goals and turn up the resistance when she ordered us to, and I succeeded most of the time. But when I felt myself being pushed too far, I backed off, turned down the resistance, and slowed down so that I could make it through the whole 50 minutes feeling good.

It worked. I was able to work up a sweat, enjoy the music and Lauren’s banter, and feel good at the end of the class while still feeling like I got a serious workout. The next time I go back will be even better. I will go back. My body is worth it.

I took two complimentary classes at Dig Cycle to facilitate this feature. Opinions and elevated heart rate are my own.

Makeup Files

It all started with this lip color.

It’s a long and boring story, but the point is that I pulled all my makeup out from under the sink and realized that it’s not very much makeup at all.

I have a minimalist skincare and makeup routine. That’s not by design—I didn’t set out to downsize my gear or the steps I take in the service of some noble calling like inner peace or streamlining my getting-ready time. I just do what I think is needed, and that’s it. Over the years I have tried on different skincare lines which I liked, but didn’t take. I really did love the products if I blogged about them here (I don’t write about products I wouldn’t recommend) but once they ran out, I just went back to my good old Cetaphil skin cleanser and whatever-I-have-hanging-around moisturizer. Right now it’s First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream (thanks to Romy Raves) which I use daily because my skin is so dry. Every few days I put coconut oil on my face first. Oh, who am I kidding? I do that every few months when I remember to. But it’s nice.

Here’s the sum total of the makeup I own:

Here’s the makeup I actually use sometimes:

And here’s what I wear every day:

I could probably get away with only owning those last three things, but I like wearing eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick sometimes. I hate wearing foundation, but for those events when I want to even out my skin tone for photos, or to feel extra confident in a meeting or presentation, I’ll use BB cream. Do other people still use BB cream? I use it so rarely that the tube I got in 2012 is the same one pictured above.

I keep the frequently used collection in a small basket right on my vanity for easy reach, and the rest in a small container under my sink. I whip out rarely-used lip colors, or eyeshadow and blush, once in a great while. It makes for easy storage and access, and I don’t have to rummage to find the right item when I’m hurrying to get ready to leave the house.

What’s in YOUR makeup basket?

Happy New Year! First Week of 2018 in Review

I waited a week to wish you all a happy new year because I was gone for much of December and I returned with a terrible cold that turned into bronchitis. My usual happy energy was muted during the first week of the year.

The good news about that is that on New Year’s Eve I visited the urgent care in Westlake Village and discover that it was a pretty great resource for a holiday Sunday. So, add that place to my list of recommendations.

On that same day, my husband and I finally got a car that belongs in this century, and we bought it at Honda of Thousand Oaks, which is another place I would recommend.

I had to work during the week, and that took all of my energy, so every day I came home and passed out. Except for Wednesday, when I attended a read-through of LVUSD’s benefit play that will happen on February 24 at Agoura High School. It’s all original works written, directed, and performed by school district staff and families and students. Again, I recommend.

Yesterday I finally headed outside to watch the kids play flag football in the new league started by the head coach of the Agoura Chargers. They had fun and it was such a gorgeous day!

And to round out the week, the whole family went to Yamato last night for the first time since we moved here 7.5 years ago. The hibachi dinner was part meal, part show. We had so much fun. Definitely worth an indulgence every now and then.

So for a week when I thought I didn’t have anything to contribute, it turns out I had some things to share with you after all. Imagine what it will be like when I truly kick this cold! Here’s to 2018. Cheers!
