Looking Forward to Summer 2015 at Knott’s Berry Farm

In a few weekends I’ll be heading down to Knott’s Berry Farm to check out the new ride, Voyage to the Iron Reef!

Surfacing May 2015, Voyage to the Iron Reef™ is a spectacular new interactive 4-D ride for the entire family. Riders aim their freeze rays at menacing sea creatures while competing against each other to blast the highest score and save Knott’s from a watery doom.

Good enough for me. I have two young boys – one is a daredevil and one doesn’t like thrill rides. But he does like video games. I’m thinking this new ride will get him to try out a new experience and maybe enjoy a day at an amusement park like he did when he was only 5.

Last time I came to Knott’s with my younger son, who loved not only the roller coasters but also the amazing variety of live entertainment at the park. Basically we went from one live show to another, fitting a ride in between. I’m hoping the other kid enjoys the shows too because another new feature this summer at Knott’s will be Vertical Impact, Geared Up, a high energy show combing acrobatics and extreme sports along with current music and an after-party. Show runs June 13 – August 23 (no shows on Mondays & Tuesdays)
I will be a guest of Knott’s Berry Farm and Giga Savvy. The opinions in this post are my own.

Memorial Day Ceremony at Pierce Brothers Memorial Park Westlake Village

Remember what Memorial Day is for: remembering. We get a day off to honor the men and women lost in the line of duty to our country and freedom.

Last year I brought my children to the Memorial Day Ceremony at Pierce Brothers Memorial Park in Westlake Village to expose them to the solemn reason behind this holiday. I can explain it to them, but I thought a ceremony of this magnitude would drive the point home a little bit better, since their lives are so removed from the sacrifice, danger, and violence of war.

This year will be the 25th annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the park on Lindero Canyon Road just north of the 101. Members from all branches of the military attend and are honored throughout, as soldiers and officers make speeches, sing tributes, and play music. Last year there was a flyover of military airplanes. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars accept donations and hand out poppies to passersby, reminders of the millions of people who have died in service.

On the weekend of Memorial Day, children from Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other organizations place flags on the graves of passed soldiers to commemorate the occasion. By the time you arrive at Pierce, the red white and blue are fluttering everywhere.

The ceremony starts tomorrow at 10:30 AM. Arrive early to get a parking spot – we got there about 30 minutes early last year and managed to get parking inside the park, but overflow parking was available at the shopping centers nearby. There was plenty of seating by the grandstand, but families also spread blankets to sit on in the grass.

The music and solemnity moved me greatly. I could not hold back my tears, especially when the announcer listed each American war from our lifetime and invited living veterans to stand and be recognized. Each stood to emotional applause.

It was a hot day, and I hadn’t brought snacks or water, so the children were restless although they asked a lot of questions about the wars and the different military services and I answered them if I could. On the way back to the car, my older son stopped to talk with the men handing out poppies. He told them how his Great Grampa, who died in 2012 at the age of 93, was a soldier in WWII. He put a dollar in the jar and proudly accepted a poppy to wear in remembrance.

The ceremony is free and incredibly moving.  Arrive early and bring snacks, water, and sunscreen. And tissues. It’s a sad occasion, but I recommend it for any family. By now there are very few of us who are not touched by war in some way.

Chiquita Banana Sing-off – Win $5,000!

Over the last decade I’ve sacrificed my dignity online for money, exposure, and favors for friends. I’m talking mostly bad photos being posted of me online, or self-deprecating stories that turn into essays that make another mother feel better, that kind of thing. I dabbled in public speaking and YouTube for a little while, but I am most comfortable at the computer and keyboard, rattling away about the things I like.

Chiquita(1)Something new came along and I find myself contemplating a sacrifice of dignity in exchange for…bananas.

Not just any bananas, though. These bananas are going to Manna in Thousand Oaks to help feed hungry people in our area. Yes, they are out there, even in The Bubble.

Basically the deal is, Chiquita Banana is sending a case of bananas to Manna in return for me telling you about this contest. For many of you, this will be lots of fun, and a chance to win up to $5,000!

It’s the Chiquita Banana sing-off! Make a music video singing the classic Chiquita Banana jingle and you’re entered. Entries will be judged NOT on Facebook likes or re-tweets (thank goodness) but by creativity, enthusiasm, and fun. How could I resist?

It’s easy to enter: visit the Chiquita Banana sing-off website, register to enter, then choose music video, sing-along, or banana-gram. I was planning to do a dramatic reading of the Chiquita jingle because I can’t really sing, (see, sacrificing my dignity!) but I opted instead for a banana-gram. Agoura Hills Mom, represent! You can see the videos that other people have made and vote for your favorites in the gallery. Some people are so creative!

I know I have some talented readers out there. You can participate if you live in the US or Canada (except Quebec) and you are 13 or older or you get your parent’s permission. The deadline to enter is May 29, so get creative and enjoy those bananas!

And if you would like to donate food to Manna, the information about how to do that and what foods they accept is here.
